Feast of Sant'Efisio in Cagliari

Sardinia's largest religious procession, the Feast of Sant'Efisio traces back to a 1656 plague vow made by Cagliari's city council and has run every May 1 since 1657. Thousands walk in village-specific traditional Sardinian costume along a four-day, sixty-kilometre route between Cagliari and the saint's shrine at Nora.

Cagliari's city council gathered on March 4, 1656, in the middle of a plague epidemic that had ravaged Sardinia since 1652, and made a solemn vow to Sant'Efisio: if the saint would free the city from the disease, the town treasury would fund an annual feast in his honour each year afterward.
