Scoppio del Carro Florence in Florence

Scoppio del Carro is Florence's Easter Sunday tradition in which a mechanical dove, ignited during the cathedral's Gloria, flies along a wire from the high altar to a firework-laden cart parked outside the Duomo, setting off an elaborate pyrotechnic display linked by legend to flints carried back from the 1097 siege of Jerusalem.

A Florentine crusader named Pazzino de' Pazzi is said to have been the first man to scale the walls during the 1097 siege of Jerusalem, and tradition holds he returned carrying flints struck from stone at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, relics still kept today in Florence's Church of Santi Apostoli.
