Festa della Madonna della Bruna in Matera
Every July 2 in Matera, a newly built papier-mache triumphal cart carries a statue of the city's patron, the Madonna della Bruna, through the streets before crowds in Piazza Vittorio Veneto tear it apart in a ritual known as lo strazzo. Fragments are kept as tokens of good luck for the year ahead.
Each July 2, a papier-mache cart built over months by a different local artist is deliberately torn apart by the crowd that follows it through Matera.
