On the night of June 16, the eve of Pisa's patron saint feast, roughly one hundred thousand candles set into white wooden frames outline the churches, towers and palaces along the Arno. Documented since 1337, the Luminara di San Ranieri ends with fireworks and depends entirely on hand-placed flame rather than electric lighting.
