The story

Putignano Carnival in Putignano

Putignano's carnival, tracing to a 1394 relic procession, is widely regarded as Europe's oldest continuous carnival and the longest in Italy, running from December 26 through Shrove Tuesday. It opens with the Festa delle Propaggini, satirical rhyming verse recited by costumed farmer-poets, and features enormous motorized papier-mache floats built through the winter months.

Local tradition dates Putignano's carnival to 1394, when monks carrying the relics of Santo Stefano inland to escape a Saracen raid passed through the countryside, and peasants are said to have abandoned their vine-grafting work to dance and improvise satirical verse alongside the procession.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Putignano's carnival stands apart through its opening ritual, the Propaggini, a form of improvised satirical poetry recited in local dialect that dates back centuries and skewers politicians and public figures the way a live editorial column might

02

The mystery stays covered

Combined with its unusually long calendar, stretching from December 26 into the weeks before Easter, and papier-mache floats built with internal motors that animate limbs and heads, the carnival blends an old oral tradition with some of Italy's most technically elaborate float engineering
