The story

Venice Carnival in Venice

Venice's costumed Carnival runs for about two weeks before Ash Wednesday, filling the historic centre with elaborate Baroque-style dress and the anonymous bauta and volto masks once used to blur class lines in the Republic of Venice. Suppressed under Napoleonic rule in 1797, it was revived as a public festival in 1979 and now combines free street events with ticketed masked balls.

Doge Vitale Falier's decree of 1094 permitting public revelry between Christmas and the start of Lent is the earliest document historians cite for the Carnival of Venice, though the festival's own founding legend points to 1162 and a Venetian military victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia.
