The story

Jamaica International Film Festival in Kingston

A three-day Kingston festival, first staged in 2008 by filmmaker Barbara Blake Hannah with Peter Gittins of Reggae Films UK, screening features, documentaries, shorts, music videos and animation built around reggae music and culture. It pairs screenings with a book fair, filmmaking seminars, artist appearances and a Make a Film in 24 Hours competition for young filmmakers.

Filmmaker and broadcaster Barbara Blake Hannah, working with Peter Gittins of Reggae Films UK, presented the first Kingston staging in 2008 under the fuller title Jamaica International Reggae Film Festival, built on the premise that reggae culture deserved its own dedicated screen showcase rather than a slot inside a general film programme.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's Make a Film in 24 Hours competition is its clearest point of distinction: entrants write, shoot and edit an entire short film overnight, and the results screen alongside professionally produced features and documentaries rather than in a separate amateur sidebar

02

The mystery stays covered

Combined with a book fair, craft and food vendors, and appearances by working reggae artists and producers, the event functions less like a conventional cinema-only festival and more like a full reggae-culture marketplace organized around a film programme

What moves first

Living ritual

The Make a Film in 24 Hours competition has become the festival's signature ritual

Water and renewal

and personal appearances by reggae artists and producers alongside the screenings keep the event rooted in music culture rather than treating film as a separate art form
