Jamaica Poetry Festival in Kingston
Founded in 2011 by dub poet Yasus Afari in partnership with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, timed to lead into Jamaica's fiftieth independence anniversary. It made the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre its home for nine years before moving between Kingston venues, and by 2025 had marked fifteen years of continuous programming built around performance poetry and spoken word.
Dub poet Yasus Afari inaugurated the Jamaica Poetry Festival in 2011, timing the launch to feed into the following year's fiftieth-anniversary independence celebrations and partnering with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission to give the new festival institutional backing from the outset.
