Moore Town Maroon Celebrations in Moore Town
Moore Town in Portland's Blue Mountains hosts the three-day Grandy Nanny Day Festival each National Heroes Day weekend in October, honoring Queen Nanny, founder of the Windward Maroon settlement and Jamaica's only female National Hero. Held at the Asafo Yard Playfield, it mixes Maroon performance, sound system and contemporary music, traditional foodways and tours to sacred sites.
Moore Town, deep in Portland's Blue Mountains, marks Jamaica's National Heroes Day weekend each October with the Grandy Nanny Day Festival, a three-day celebration built around the life and legacy of Queen Nanny, the Windward Maroon warrior-leader who founded the settlement as New Nanny Town in 1740, after the destruction of the original Nanny Town, and who remains Jamaica's only female National Hero.
