Tacky Heritage Week in Port Maria
Tacky Heritage Week, organized annually every April by the St Mary Parish Library in Port Maria, commemorates Tacky's Revolt of April 7 1760, one of the most significant slave rebellions in British Caribbean history. The week ties directly to the rebellion's actual geography, including Fort Haldane and the former Frontier and Trinity estates, and now sits alongside the officially declared National Chief Takyi Day on April 8.
On Easter Monday, April 7, 1760, Tacky, an enslaved man of Fante origin with military training from West Africa, led an uprising that took the Frontier and Trinity plantations in St Mary parish before his forces marched on Port Maria, capturing the storeroom at Fort Haldane and briefly holding the town against British colonial forces.
