Calabash International Literary Festival in Treasure Beach

Jamaica's leading literary festival, founded in 2001 by Colin Channer, Kwame Dawes, and Justine Henzell at Jakes Hotel in Treasure Beach. Now internationally known, it has hosted writers including Salman Rushdie, Jamaica Kincaid, and Derek Walcott in readings staged in an open-air tent on the south coast, traditionally with free admission.

Novelist Colin Channer, poet Kwame Dawes, and producer Justine Henzell founded the Calabash International Literary Festival in 2001, launching it at Jakes Hotel in Treasure Beach to an audience of about 300 people, mostly friends and family of the organizers.
