The story

Aomori Nebuta Festival in Aomori

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri fills the first week of August with illuminated washi-paper floats depicting warriors and legendary figures, paraded through the city each night by teams of handlers. Leaping haneto dancers in tasseled costumes chant alongside every float, and visitors can join the dancing themselves, making this one of Tohoku's three great summer festivals.

The Nebuta Matsuri is thought to descend from a blending of the Tanabata star festival, imported from China during the Nara period, with older Tsugaru regional customs of floating small lanterns on rivers to carry away impurity and drowsiness before the autumn harvest.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Nebuta apart is the sheer scale and craft of its floats, built over most of a year by specialist nebuta-shi artisans and lit internally so warriors and gods seem to glow from within the darkness

02

The mystery stays covered

Anyone can dance as a haneto by renting the correct tasseled costume on site, turning the audience into active participants chanting rasse ra as they bounce alongside the floats, a rare degree of hands-on access for a festival of this scale
