Hakata Gion Yamakasa in Fukuoka

Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a two-week Fukuoka festival built around Kushida Shrine, culminating in the pre-dawn Oiyama race when teams carry one-ton yamakasa floats through the streets while spectators douse the runners with water. Tracing back to a 1241 plague-purification ritual, it was named a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.

Hakata Gion Yamakasa traces its origin to 1241, when the Buddhist monk Enni, later honored posthumously as Shoichi Kokushi, is said to have been carried through plague-stricken Hakata atop a wooden platform called a gaki-dana, sprinkling holy water on the townspeople to drive away disease.
