The story

Inuyama Festival in Inuyama

Inuyama Festival, established in 1635 by the lord of Inuyama Castle to honor Haritsuna Shrine, features thirteen eight-meter yama floats carrying karakuri mechanical puppets largely built in the eighteenth century. Timed to the region's cherry blossom season each spring, the daytime parade through the historic castle town gives way to an evening procession with all floats illuminated by 365 lanterns apiece.

Inuyama Festival began in 1635 at the encouragement of Naruse Hayato no Sho Masatora, chief retainer of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family and lord of Inuyama Castle, establishing an annual float event dedicated to Haritsuna Shrine that has continued in recognizable form for nearly four centuries since.
