Kawagoe Festival in Kawagoe

Kawagoe Festival, tracing to the 1648 Jinkosai procession honoring Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, developed its signature Edo-style floats starting in 1698 and now features roughly twenty of the city's twenty-nine floats parading each third weekend of October. The evening hikkawase, a competitive musical face-off between floats meeting at intersections, is the festival's most distinctive tradition.

Kawagoe Festival traces its origin to 1648 and the establishment of Jinkosai, a religious procession honoring the deity of Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, itself said to have been founded in the sixth century during the reign of Emperor Kinmei, giving the shrine a documented history of well over a millennium before the festival most associated with it today took shape.
