Gion Matsuri in Kyoto

Gion Matsuri is Kyoto's month-long July festival centered on Yasaka Shrine, famous for its towering Yamaboko Junko float parades on the 17th and 24th. Rooted in a ninth-century plague-purification ritual, the event now fills the old merchant districts with lantern-lit yoiyama evenings, ornate floats, and centuries of neighborhood craftsmanship.

Kyoto's Yasaka Shrine traces Gion Matsuri back to the year 869, when Emperor Seiwa ordered a purification ritual called goryo-e to end an epidemic sweeping the capital.
