Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto

Jidai Matsuri, founded in 1895 to mark the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding as imperial capital, presents a costume procession of more than two thousand participants in accurately researched period dress, moving in reverse chronological order from the Meiji era back to the Heian period. Held each October 22, it ranks alongside Aoi Matsuri and Gion Matsuri as one of Kyoto's three great festivals.

Jidai Matsuri was founded in 1895 by Kyoto citizens as part of the commemorations marking both the construction of Heian Shrine and the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the imperial capital to Heian-kyo, the city that would become Kyoto, in the year 794.
