Kyoto Gozan Okuribi in Kyoto
Gozan Okuribi closes Kyoto's Obon season each August 16 with five enormous bonfires lit in sequence on mountains around the city, shaped into characters including Daimonji, Myo-Ho, Funagata, Hidari Daimonji, and Toriigata. The ritual, believed to guide ancestral spirits back to the afterlife, is visible from many points across the Kyoto basin rather than one fixed venue.
Gozan Okuribi's precise origin is genuinely uncertain, and that uncertainty is itself part of how the ritual is discussed by Kyoto historians.
