Nachi Fire Festival in Nachikatsuura

Nachi Fire Festival, held each July 14 at Kumano Nachi Taisha within the UNESCO World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network, features twelve fifty-kilogram pine torches carried down toward the sacred Nachi waterfall to purify the path for the fan-decorated Ogi Mikoshi. The event includes Nachi Dengaku, a ritual dance dating to at least 1403, ranking it among Japan's three great fire festivals.

Nachi Fire Festival, formally called Nachi no Ogi Matsuri or the Nachi Fan Festival, is held at Kumano Nachi Taisha, a grand shrine whose own founding tradition traces back to the year 317, when it was established near Nachi-no-Otaki, a waterfall long worshipped as a manifestation of the divine and the tallest single-drop waterfall in Japan.
