The story

Okinawa Zento Eisa Matsuri in Okinawa City

Okinawa Zento Eisa Matsuri began in 1956 as a competitive eisa event marking the founding of Koza City, later becoming Okinawa City. Reorganized as a noncompetitive festival in 1977, it now brings dozens of drum-and-dance troupes together on the weekend after Lunar Bon each summer, drawing roughly 300,000 spectators as the largest annual event in Okinawa Prefecture.

In 1956, in the aftermath of wartime devastation and amid the difficult postwar reconstruction of Okinawa, the newly founded Koza City organized a competitive eisa event intended to lift community spirits and mark the city's establishment.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Watching dozens of eisa troupes perform back to back over three nights reveals just how much regional variation exists within a single tradition, from drumming tempo to costume color to choreography passed down through specific neighborhoods for generations

02

The mystery stays covered

The shift away from competition in 1977 is central to the event's character today, since troupes perform to share their local style rather than to win, giving the festival a cooperative, celebratory tone distinct from more contest-driven events

03

The city starts moving

Okinawa City's 2007 declaration as the City of Eisa reflects how deeply tied the festival is to local identity
