The story

Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka

Tenjin Matsuri honors Sugawara no Michizane, the deified god of scholarship enshrined at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, with a July 24 to 25 celebration combining a daytime land procession and a nighttime river parade of illuminated boats. Roughly five thousand fireworks close the night over the Okawa River, drawing over a million spectators to one of Japan's three great festivals.

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine dates the origins of Tenjin Matsuri to the year 951, when a ritual was first held to send the divine spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, the deified scholar enshrined there, out to a resting place by boat, a ceremony known as the funatogyo.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The funatogyo boat procession is the festival's defining spectacle, with around one hundred illuminated vessels carrying mikoshi, musicians, and bunraku puppet performers gliding down the Okawa River after dark, some lit by open flame in a nod to the original nighttime patrol boats

02

The mystery stays covered

The closing fireworks, roughly five thousand shells fired in sync with the boats still on the water, create one of Osaka's most photographed summer scenes and give the festival its nickname as a celebration of fire and water
