Yosakoi Soran Festival in Sapporo
Yosakoi Soran Festival, founded in 1992 by Hokkaido University students, combines the naruko-clapper choreography of Kochi's Yosakoi Festival with the melody of the traditional Hokkaido folk song Soran Bushi. Centered on Sapporo's Odori Park each June, the festival draws more than two million visitors and hundreds of competing dance teams from across Japan.
Yosakoi Soran Festival was founded in 1992 by a group of Hokkaido University students who set out to combine two distinct regional traditions into something new for Sapporo.
