Sendai Aoba Festival, reviving the 1655 Sendai Festival honoring founding daimyo Date Masamune, was reestablished in 1985 and now runs each third weekend of May with two distinct days: the Suzume Odori sparrow dance on Saturday and a mikoshi and yamaboko float procession honoring Aoba Shrine's deity on Sunday. It draws roughly one million visitors and ten thousand participants.
