Takayama Festival in Takayama

Takayama Festival refers to two seasonal events in Gifu Prefecture's old town, the spring Sanno Matsuri at Hie Shrine and the autumn Hachiman Matsuri at Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine, both featuring ornate yatai floats built between the 1600s and 1800s. Several floats carry karakuri mechanical puppets performing choreographed routines, and evening processions light the floats with lanterns.
