Awa Odori is a roughly 400-year-old dance tradition centered in Tokushima City, where organized troupes called ren perform high-stepping choreography to shamisen, taiko, and flute music each August 12 through 15. Around one hundred thousand dancers and over a million spectators fill the streets during the festival's peak, held at the height of the Obon season.
