Asakusa Samba Carnival in Tokyo

Asakusa Samba Carnival began in 1981 when Taito City's mayor invited a winning Rio de Janeiro Carnival dance troupe to perform, sparking an event that has grown into the largest samba carnival competition in the Northern Hemisphere. Held each late August, it now draws more than five hundred thousand spectators and over five thousand performers in feathered costumes competing through Asakusa's streets.

Asakusa Samba Carnival began in 1981, when the mayor of Taito City invited the winning dance group from Rio de Janeiro's Carnival to perform in Tokyo, an initiative launched by local retail traders in the Asakusa district hoping that an infusion of Brazilian energy and spectacle might help revitalize an area of the city that had lost some of its earlier commercial prominence.
