Comic Market in Tokyo
Comic Market, or Comiket, began on December 21, 1975, with about 700 attendees and 32 circles selling self-published doujinshi in a small Tokyo conference room. Now held twice yearly at Tokyo Big Sight since 1996, the not-for-profit, volunteer-run convention has grown into the largest fan gathering in the world, with turnstile attendance reaching an estimated 750,000 in recent record years.
Comic Market, universally known by its shorthand Comiket, held its inaugural event on December 21, 1975, an unassuming gathering organized by the doujin circle Labyrinth, a manga research society, in a small conference room rented from the Japan Firefighting Association in the Toranomon district of Tokyo, drawing an estimated 700 attendees across just 32 participating circles.
