Kanda Matsuri in Tokyo

Kanda Matsuri commemorates Tokugawa Ieyasu's 1600 victory at Sekigahara and centers on Kanda Myojin, a shrine founded in 730. Held with a full procession in odd-numbered years, it features roughly two hundred participants in period costume escorting mikoshi through central Tokyo, and ranks alongside Sanno and Fukagawa Matsuri among the three great festivals of old Edo.

Kanda Matsuri traces its origins to the year 1600, when it was established to commemorate Tokugawa Ieyasu's decisive victory at the Battle of Sekigahara, the conflict that paved the way for the Tokugawa shogunate and more than two centuries of Edo-period rule.
