Tokyo Rainbow Pride in Tokyo

Tokyo Rainbow Pride traces back to a 1994 march of over a thousand participants, with the modern organization founded in 2011 staging its first march in 2012 with about 4,500 attendees. Growth has been dramatic since, surpassing 10,000 marchers by 2019 and reaching roughly 15,000 marchers and 270,000 total festival attendees at its thirtieth-anniversary edition, with the event moved from April to June in 2025 to align with global Pride Month.

Tokyo's first Pride march took place in 1994, organized by the Japanese branch of the International Lesbian and Gay Association and drawing more than a thousand participants who walked from Shinjuku Central Park to the since-closed Miyashita Park in Shibuya, an early and comparatively small public assertion of LGBTQ visibility in a country where such organized demonstrations remained uncommon at the time.
