The story

Nairobi Litfest in Nairobi

A literary and arts festival run by Book Bunk, the civil society organization restoring Nairobi's historic public libraries since 2017, first held virtually in 2021 before becoming an in-person event hosted within those restored libraries. Its fifth edition, following a 2024 partnership with Hay Festival Global, spanned three days across the McMillan Memorial, Kaloleni and Eastlands libraries in May, with more than twenty-five sessions including masterclasses, panels, performances and a children's festival.

Nairobi Litfest is a literary and arts festival rooted firmly in Nairobi's public library system, run by the civil society organization Book Bunk, which has been restoring the city's historic public libraries since 2017 as part of its broader mission to revive these spaces as genuine centers of community cultural life.
