The story

Anibar International Animation Festival in Peja

Anibar International Animation Festival is Kosovo's only animation festival, held each summer in Peja since 2010. Founded by young art activists on a 500-euro budget with 80 films, it has grown into a roughly 15,000-visitor event drawing entries from more than 50 countries, and it revitalized Peja's only cinema, Jusuf Gervalla, into a year-round cultural center.

In 2010, a group of young art activists in Peja started an animation festival with a budget of 500 euros and a programme of 80 films, working without the backing of an established arts institution in a country where animation had no dedicated festival at all.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Anibar's growth from a 500-euro, 80-film first edition into a festival pulling submissions from over 50 countries makes it one of the clearest examples in Kosovo of a small grassroots cultural project scaling into internationally recognized infrastructure

02

The mystery stays covered

Its most concrete legacy is physical: in 2016, Peja's municipal assembly granted Anibar a 15-year mandate to administer the city's previously non-functional cinema, Jusuf Gervalla, which the festival had already been using for screenings since its founding, turning what had been a dormant single-screen cinema into a year-round cultural center anchored by the festival's own Animation Academy training programme

03

The city starts moving

The festival's outdoor Cinema Lake venue, a 100-seat lakeside screening space that supplies visitors with inflatable boats, gives Anibar a visual identity distinct from a standard indoor film festival
