The story

Oimo Festival in Karakol

Running since 2006, Oimo is one of Central Asia's largest traditional-crafts festivals, opening in Bishkek in late July before moving to Cholpon-Ata on Issyk-Kul. More than 120 artisans demonstrate felt-making, embroidery, wood carving, and jewelry, turning the event into both a live-craft showcase and a direct marketplace for buyers.

Oimo, whose name means ornament in Kyrgyz, has run since 2006 as one of Central Asia's largest platforms for traditional crafts, gathering more than 120 artisans from across the region each year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Master felt-makers demonstrate shyrdak and ala-kiyiz carpet techniques from start to finish, cutting and mosaicking wool by hand in front of visitors, and several stalls offer short workshops where guests can try wool felting themselves

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's Cholpon-Ata stage overlaps with peak Issyk-Kul beach season, so craft browsing pairs naturally with a lake holiday

03

The city starts moving

Artisans travel from across Central Asia, giving the event a genuinely regional character rather than a purely Kyrgyz one, and prices are typically set directly with the makers
