Women Artisans Felt Festival in Bishkek/Naryn

The Kyrgyz Shyrdak Festival celebrates the country's UNESCO-recognized felt-carpet heritage, ala-kiyiz and shyrdak, brought together annually every June in the mountainous Naryn region, a major felt-craft center. First organized in 2010 following UNESCO's inscription of these carpets onto the Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the festival draws around 300 artisans and is run by the Craft Council of Kyrgyzstan with support from the Ministry of Culture.

Felt has shaped daily life in Kyrgyzstan's mountains for centuries, lining the walls and floors of yurts and marking important household events with patterned carpets known as ala-kiyiz and shyrdak.
