Boun Ho Khao Padabdin falls on the waning moon of the ninth lunar month, typically August, when Vientiane households wrap small packets of rice, fruit, and everyday goods and place them at dawn around homes and temples to feed the spirits of ancestors and the unremembered dead, guided back to the human world by predawn monastic rites.
Boun Ho Khao Padabdin, literally to decorate the earth with small packets, is a somber ancestor festival observed across Laos, including in Vientiane, on the fifteenth day of the waning moon in the ninth lunar month, typically falling in August, roughly two weeks before the related Boun Khao Salak festival later in the year.
