Champasak Wat Phu Candle Procession in Wat Phu
The candlelit wian thian is the closing ritual of Boun Vat Phou, held on the full-moon evening of the third lunar month at the Wat Phu temple ruins in Champasak. Pilgrims climb the ancient terraces carrying candles, incense, and flowers, circling the lower sanctuary three times before ascending toward the cliffside shrine, capping a day of alms-giving and prayer with the festival's most visually striking moment.
On the full-moon evening of the third lunar month, when Boun Vat Phou reaches its final hours, thousands of candles begin climbing the ancient stone terraces of Wat Phu in Champasak province.
