The story

Baalbeck International Festival in Baalbek

Founded in 1956, the Baalbeck International Festival is the oldest major performing arts festival in the Middle East, staging concerts, opera, dance, and theater each July and August among the Roman ruins of Baalbek's Temple of Jupiter and Temple of Bacchus. Past performers span Ella Fitzgerald, Fairuz, and Umm Kulthum, and the festival's Lebanese Nights strand historically helped launch the Rahbani brothers into national prominence.

Founded in 1956 under the patronage of President Camille Chamoun and organized by a committee of volunteers drawn from Lebanon's cultural elite, the Baalbeck International Festival is the oldest and most prestigious performing arts festival in the Middle East, staged each July and August among the Roman ruins of Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

No other Lebanese festival stages performances inside a UNESCO World Heritage Roman temple complex, and the acoustics and visual drama of columns lit against the night sky give even familiar repertoire an unusual charge at Baalbeck

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's deliberate mixing of classical, folk, jazz, and dance programming within a single season, rather than specializing in one genre, means a single visit can expose audiences to an opera one night and a contemporary dance company or jazz act on another within the same festival run
