The story

European-Libyan Film Festival Tripoli in General Authority for Cinema, Theater and Arts, Tripoli

Tripoli's General Authority for Cinema hosted the first European-Libyan Film Festival, November 24 to 28, at its headquarters on Zawia Street. Organized with the EU Delegation to Libya and the embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Malta and Spain, the festival screened films from six countries, aiming to build cultural bridges between Europe and Libya through cinema.

For years, sustained cultural exchange between Libya and Europe has been difficult to organize amid the country's political instability, making institutional cultural events like film festivals rare rather than routine.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This inaugural festival stands out for the breadth of diplomatic backing behind it: rather than a single-country cultural exchange, it brought together the EU Delegation to Libya alongside the embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Malta and Spain, making it a genuinely multilateral effort to use film as a tool of cultural diplomacy

02

The mystery stays covered

Screening films from six countries within a five-day program at the General Authority for Cinema's own headquarters on Zawia Street gave Tripoli audiences direct access to European cinema often otherwise unavailable locally, while offering European partners a rare formal platform inside Libya's own cultural institutions

03

The city starts moving

As a first edition, the festival also signals a broader reopening of cultural exchange between Libya and Europe after years of disrupted institutional cooperation
