The story

Kaziukas Fair in Vilnius

Lithuania's largest outdoor spring fair, held in Vilnius's Cathedral Square around March 4 since the early seventeenth century, in honor of Saint Casimir's feast day, drawing over a thousand vendors selling amber jewelry, smoked meats, pottery, leather goods and the fair's signature decorated Easter palm known as verba.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few civic traditions in Vilnius can claim the continuity of Kaziuko Muge, whose roots stretch back roughly four centuries to the earliest years of the seventeenth century, formalized further when merchants won the right to trade directly in Cathedral Square in 1827

02

The mystery stays covered

The fair's signature verba, an elaborately decorated dried Easter palm unique to Lithuanian tradition, has become a competitive craft form in its own right, giving the fair a distinctive product no other regional market shares
