Chong Yeung Festival, also called Chung Yeung or the Double Ninth Festival, is a public holiday observed on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, a roughly 2,000-year-old tradition also known as Senior People's Day. Macao's Chinese community marks the day with ancestral grave visits and offerings, alongside traditional practices such as hill climbing, eating chongyang cakes, admiring chrysanthemums and drinking chrysanthemum tea.
The number nine holds a particular charge in traditional Chinese numerology, associated with yang energy, the active, masculine principle in the yin-yang cosmology that has shaped Chinese thought for millennia.
