The story

Likoma Island Festival in Likoma Island

The Likoma Island Festival is a four-day event held on Likoma Island, a Malawian exclave in Lake Malawi surrounded by Mozambican waters, organized under Malawi's Ministry of Tourism to promote the island for investment and tourism. The 2024 edition ran from 12 to 15 October and drew an expected twelve and a half thousand attendees, featuring bands, traditional dances, swimming, a parade, and sightseeing.

The Likoma Island Festival brings visitors to one of Malawi's most geographically unusual communities: Likoma Island, an eighteen square kilometer Malawian exclave sitting entirely within Mozambican waters in Lake Malawi, home to roughly ten thousand five hundred residents alongside another four thousand on the neighboring island of Chizumulu.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Likoma Island itself makes this festival unusual before any programming begins: a small, eighteen square kilometer Malawian territory entirely surrounded by Mozambican waters, home to roughly ten thousand five hundred residents plus another four thousand on neighboring Chizumulu, it became Malawian rather than Mozambican after the Universities' Mission to Central Africa, responding to an appeal from David Livingstone, established its headquarters there in 1884, a legacy still visible in the island's large Anglican Cathedral of St Peter

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival is explicitly framed by organizers around Malawi's Malawi 2063 development vision, positioning it as a tool for promoting investment, with transport coordinated through the Likoma Tour Guides Association using boats, bicycles, motorcycles, and cars
