Zomba City Festival in Zomba

The Zomba City Festival has run annually since 2021 on Labour Day weekend around 1 May, after a planned 2020 inaugural edition was cancelled due to COVID-19. Held in Zomba, Malawi's former colonial capital, the festival is designed to showcase the city's attractiveness to visitors, set against its British colonial-era architecture and the backdrop of the Zomba Plateau.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Zomba's own history gives the festival unusual depth for a relatively young event: the city served as the capital of British Central Africa, then of the Nyasaland Protectorate, and remained the capital of independent Malawi from 1964 until the mid-1970s, with Parliament continuing to sit there until 1994, leaving behind colonial-era buildings, the Zomba Gymkhana Club, and botanical gardens that give the city a distinctive character among Malawian towns

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival sits at the base of the Zomba Plateau, a highland area known for rock climbing and birdwatching, and the city is also home to Chancellor College and the Zomba Prison Project, whose 2015 album was Grammy-nominated for Best World Music Album
