Thaipusam at Batu Caves is Malaysia's largest Tamil Hindu festival, drawing over a million devotees each year to the limestone cave temple complex north of Kuala Lumpur to honor the god Murugan. Pilgrims climb 272 steps beneath a 43-meter gold statue of Murugan while carrying kavadi, ornate physical burdens that can include body piercing and elaborate frameworks decorated with peacock feathers, fulfilling vows made in gratitude or seeking divine assistance.
