The story

George Town Festival in George Town

The George Town Festival is an annual month-long celebration of arts, culture and heritage in Penang's UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, launched in 2010 to mark the inscription of George Town's historic core the previous year. Managed by Malaysian artist Joe Sidek from its inception, the festival grew from a modest debut to drawing roughly 250,000 visitors by 2015, staging dance, music, theater and heritage exhibitions inside George Town's colonial-era shophouses and civic buildings.

George Town earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008, recognition of the Penang capital's exceptional collection of colonial-era shophouses, civic buildings and multicultural urban fabric shaped by centuries as a trading port where Malay, Chinese, Indian and British influences settled and blended into a distinct architectural and social heritage.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

George Town Festival's defining feature is its use of the city's own UNESCO-listed architecture as active performance infrastructure rather than backdrop, staging dance, music and theater directly inside heritage shophouses, colonial civic buildings and historic streets that themselves earned World Heritage status in 2008, turning a walk through the festival program into a walk through George Town's own layered colonial and multicultural history

02

The mystery stays covered

Its programming deliberately mixes major international acts with a majority of locally rooted performers, and past editions have highlighted shared regional culture, including a 2014 program featuring Singaporean artists reflecting on the two cities' shared Straits Settlements history, and cross-border collaborations such as a 2019 co-production with Australia's OzAsia Festival
