George Town Festival in George Town
The George Town Festival is an annual month-long celebration of arts, culture and heritage in Penang's UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, launched in 2010 to mark the inscription of George Town's historic core the previous year. Managed by Malaysian artist Joe Sidek from its inception, the festival grew from a modest debut to drawing roughly 250,000 visitors by 2015, staging dance, music, theater and heritage exhibitions inside George Town's colonial-era shophouses and civic buildings.
George Town earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008, recognition of the Penang capital's exceptional collection of colonial-era shophouses, civic buildings and multicultural urban fabric shaped by centuries as a trading port where Malay, Chinese, Indian and British influences settled and blended into a distinct architectural and social heritage.
