Penang Chingay Parade in George Town

The Penang Chingay Parade is a century-old street procession in George Town, best known for performers balancing towering flagpoles on their chins, foreheads, and fingertips, alongside lion and dragon dances. Introduced by nineteenth-century Hokkien immigrants, the first officially recorded parade took place in 1919 during birthday celebrations for the Deity of Compassion, held to seek divine protection during a plague outbreak.

The Chingay Parade traces its Penang origins to the Chinese community of George Town in the early twentieth century, brought by Hokkien immigrants from Fujian province as part of temple processions honoring their deities.
