The story

Ipoh International Art Festival in Ipoh

The Ipoh International Arts Festival, organized by the local creative collective PORT, is a contemporary visual art exhibition held in Ipoh, Malaysia, first launched in 2019 and revived for its third edition in December 2023 and fourth in mid-2025. The festival brings together thirty or more artists from Malaysia and abroad for exhibitions, installations, and a youth-focused creative camp, most recently themed around art, healing, and the future.

Ipoh, a former tin-mining town in Malaysia's Perak state, has built an international reputation over the past decade largely through its street murals, painted by artists including Lithuanian muralist Ernest Zacharevic, which turned the city's old shophouse walls into a popular photography destination.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike Ipoh's famous street murals, which are a fixed permanent attraction, the festival is a temporary, curated exhibition drawing artists from across Asia, Europe, and North America to show contemporary paintings, sculpture, and installation work under a single unifying theme each edition, 2023's Marcapada examined the world today, while 2025's Gema explored art, healing, and the future

02

The mystery stays covered

A Creative Youth Camp built into the program gives young participants hands-on workshops rather than passive viewing, and talks addressing practical topics like music copyright, held under an Ipoh Creative Music City banner, extend the festival's reach into the region's broader creative economy
