Miri May Fest in Miri
Miri May Fest turns the coastal Sarawak city of Miri into a month-long celebration every May, building toward the Miri City Day anniversary on the 20th. Running annually since 1989, the festival mixes indigenous dance, traditional music, street parades and food fairs that reflect the roughly 32 ethnic groups living in and around Miri, from Iban and Kayan to Chinese and Malay communities.
Miri sits on Sarawak's northern coast, a city built on the oil industry but shaped just as much by the dozens of ethnic communities who call it home.
