Festival des Masques et Marionnettes de Markala in Markala
Festival des Masques et Marionnettes de Markala celebrates Bambara masquerade and puppetry traditions in Markala, a Niger River town in the Segou region best known for the Markala Dam. The festival brings together masquerade troupes for processions and performances featuring carved wooden masks and articulated puppet figures, forms that are central to harvest and initiation ceremonies across the region.
In much of the Segou region, masks and puppets are not museum pieces but working ceremonial tools.
