The story

BirguFest in Birgu/Vittoriosa

BirguFest, also known as the Vittoriosa Candle Festival, is a night-time street festival held each October in Birgu, Vittoriosa, one of Malta's Three Cities. Its signature moment, Birgu by Candlelight, switches off electric lighting so thousands of candles illuminate the narrow streets. The largely free event also brings historical re-enactments, live performances, craft exhibitions, and Maltese food to public spaces throughout the fortified city.

Each October, the fortified streets of Birgu, known historically as Vittoriosa, go dark by design.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

BirguFest's defining feature is the wholesale switch from electric light to candlelight across an entire historic city

02

The mystery stays covered

For one night, Birgu's electric street lighting is turned off and thousands of candles are set out along the narrow streets and alleys of the fortified peninsula, transforming the town into a scene lit entirely by flame

03

The city starts moving

The festival layers historical re-enactments, live performances, local crafts, and Maltese cuisine onto that backdrop, while museums and historic sites, including Fort St Angelo, open with discounted entry for the occasion

04

The water draws everyone in

Because Birgu is one of Malta's Three Cities and carries centuries of maritime and military history, the candlelit setting gives the festival a distinctly period atmosphere that few other Maltese events attempt on this scale
