Il-Karnival tas-Sajf in Bugibba/Marsaskala/Gozo
Il-Karnival tas-Sajf, or Summer Carnival, brings Malta's carnival traditions of floats, costumes and street dancing to Bugibba and Marsaskala each August, offering a lighter, seaside version of the main February Carnival. Evenings from around 19:00 fill the promenades with music, parading floats and dancers, aimed at residents and tourists who cannot visit during winter carnival season.
Malta's Carnival has deep roots, tracing back through centuries of Catholic pre-Lenten celebration during which villages and towns built elaborate floats, staged masked parades and let normal social order loosen for a few days before the discipline of Lent began.
