The story

Feast of St Publius Floriana in Floriana

The Feast of St Publius, held in Floriana on the Sunday after St Peter and St Paul's day in late June, honours the town's patron saint, traditionally identified as Malta's first bishop and the Roman governor said to have welcomed St Paul after his shipwreck. The feast includes a statue procession, elaborate street decoration, band marches and fireworks in the town just outside Valletta's fortifications.

Floriana occupies a strip of fortified land between Valletta and the rest of Malta, laid out by the Italian military engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani in the seventeenth century as an additional line of defence for the capital, and its wide streets and formal gardens still carry that military planning today.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Floriana sits immediately outside Valletta's land front, built as a fortified suburb by the Knights of St John, giving its patron feast an unusually grand architectural backdrop of bastions, gardens and wide ceremonial streets designed for military rather than purely residential purposes

02

The mystery stays covered

St Publius holds a distinctive place in Maltese religious history as the Roman-era governor described in the Acts of the Apostles as hosting St Paul after his shipwreck, later venerated as Malta's first bishop, giving Floriana's feast a direct link to the same foundational Christian story marked in Valletta's own February feast
